Aerodrome Control Taster: Core Tower Skills and Safety Refresher is a high-impact micro-course designed for licensed and returning aerodrome/tower air traffic control officers (ATCOs) who want to quickly sharpen operational currency. In under half a day, you’ll refresh the core tower tasks that keep runways safe and traffic flowing—clearances, readbacks, separation basics, and disciplined coordination—through concise guidance and scenario-driven decision drills. The course aligns with international standards (ICAO/EASA) while emphasizing just culture, threat and error management (TEM), and professionalism in day-to-day operations. You will revisit runway and manoeuvring area management, conditional clearances, wake turbulence cues, stop-bar discipline, and best-practice readback/hearback techniques to reduce incursion risk. We also cover situational awareness, scanning, workload management, and teamwork across ADC, GMC, and supervisory roles, including fallbacks for degraded modes. Short scenario labs focus on mixed-mode operations with vehicle crossings and low-visibility procedures, reinforcing runway integrity under uncertainty. Knowledge checks throughout help you verify understanding and pinpoint areas for further practice. Whether you are recently inactive, transitioning back to tower duties, or preparing for a revalidation, this taster provides actionable refreshers, quick-reference takeaways, and clear next steps into a full Aerodrome Control Refresher program with extended simulation and assessment.

Aerodrome Control Taster: Core Tower Skills and Safety Refresher is a short, high-impact program designed to reinforce the fundamentals that keep tower operations safe, efficient, and predictable. Centered on realistic, scenario-driven practice, it complements a full Aerodrome Control Refresher by sharpening immediate on-position performance: runway and manoeuvring area management, precise clearances, readback/hearback discipline, and coordination under varying workload and visibility conditions. Throughout, the course underscores just culture, threat and error management, and professional communication standards, helping licensed and returning ATCOs re-align with current ICAO, EASA, and national provisions while respecting local unit adaptations.

The orientation section aligns expectations and safety culture, then quickly maps the reference framework you will draw from—ICAO Annexes 2, 11, and 14; Doc 4444 (PANS-ATM); Doc 9426; EASA regulations; and local AIP or Unit Orders—highlighting recent changes in phraseology, safety nets, and runway incursion prevention. Core tower responsibilities are revisited with emphasis on manoeuvring area control, vehicle permissions and hotspots, LVP overviews, and inter-unit coordination with Approach/ACC, Apron/SMGCS, Fire and Rescue, and MET. You will refresh runway operations—line-up, takeoff, landing and conditional clearances; separation basics, intersection departures, and wake considerations—while tightening readback practices that prevent incursions. Situational awareness is strengthened through disciplined scanning, effective use of A‑SMGCS/SMR, integration of wind/RVR cues, mental modeling, prioritization, and strategic brevity. Team resource management modules clarify role boundaries (ADC, GMC, Coordinator/Supervisor, Flight Data), elevate crisp handoffs, and prepare fallbacks for degraded modes using checklists and standard calls.

Abnormal and non-routine operations receive focused attention: tower-side priorities during declared emergencies, communication and alerting flows, safeguarding during excursions or rejected takeoffs, and coordinated handling of diversions, followed by robust post-occurrence logging and debrief practices. Runway safety hotspots, call sign and identifier traps, and stop bar discipline are converted into practical prevention tools with memory aids, progressive taxi, and time-outs. Applied practice arrives through concise scenario labs—mixed-mode with vehicle crossings, and low-visibility with degraded surveillance—requiring you to decide when to issue, withhold, cancel, or amend clearances, then self-assess via micro-debrief prompts. Knowledge checks throughout consolidate core responsibilities, phraseology, separation and wake, situational awareness, and abnormal coordination, ensuring measurable retention. The course concludes with quick-reference takeaways and guidance toward the full Aerodrome Control Refresher program—supporting supervisors, trainers, assessors, ANSP/CAA staff, and advanced trainees in aligning current standards with local procedures and re-validation needs.
